As always synchronicities abound. I have recently watched this small report on the economics of Chinese brand Pop Mart, while also having the pleasure to read a must-read article by cinematographer friend and all-around pop culture digger and theorist Cristian Dragan (in Romanian) about the synthetics, aesthetics, and politics of cutness & Labubu collectibles online craze. Chinese youth subculture mag Radii was also showcasing #guzi #谷子 trend that grew out of ACGN (two dimensional = Anime Comics Gaming Novels) fandoms with fans using DIY and 3 printing to make idols or merch of their favorite characters – evolving into making guzi with their pets, their friends or even themselves.
