At the end, who can you count on to report on many of today’s most urgent issues and combat some of the most brazen disinformation campaigns and right-wing power grabs? I found that Qatar’s Al Jazeera, in all these years (and I have been watching reports or live transmissions by Al Jazeera for at least 15 years), still keeps its high journalistic standards. Quietly and not so quietly, billionaires are bankrolling a right-wing consensus across Europe. It will come as a surprise that a non-European, non-Western TV station is able and willing to do this work – and expose both the mess Europe is in and the constant nudging of racist xenophobic campaigns by some of the most toxic and disgusting characters on this planet. The documentary grounds everything in an analysis of material conditions, a reflection of the breaking regulatory protection European consumers still enjoy, and making sure democracy has less and less a winning chance. It is an aging continent, where the economy is slowing down, and where the Great Replacement theory is the worst thing that could happen.
If Fortress Europe always existed Europe is not hitting economical limits but political limits with immigration conspiracy theories (such as the Eurabia and the Great Replacement BS entering our vocabulary and being sponsored and backed from abroad by Elon Musk, Mercer, and many other rich people of the planet (mostly American) as well as ethno populist politicians (Orban with Fides, Weidel with Afd, etc.), as well as a medley of far right ideologues (Curtis Yarvin, Peter Thiel, Steve Bannon). Not only that but the response of mainstream politicians has been to adopt the anti-immigration rhetoric and embrace its conspiratorial tenets (see Macron, Merz, Starmer, and others,) with voters also increasingly adopting and distributing such brazen disinformation.
It feels like European leaders have still not processed that the US is probably the biggest enemy they face, since as this documentary makes clear, anti-EU, and anti-Brussels sentiment with JD Vance and Bannon is basically at the heart of their unite the right campaign.
