Doctor Sleep (sometimes referred to as Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep) is a 2019 American horror film based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Stephen King, a sequel to King’s 1977 novel The Shining. The film, which also serves as a sequel to the film adaptation of The Shining, directed by Stanley Kubrick, is set several decades after the events of the original and combines elements of the 1977 novel as well.

Doctor Sleep is written, directed, and edited by Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House). It stars Ewan McGregor as Danny Torrance, a man with psychic abilities who struggles with childhood trauma. Rebecca Ferguson, Kyliegh Curran, and Cliff Curtis have supporting roles.

Stephen King felt that the elements of Kubrick’s film that he disliked were “redeemed” for him in Doctor Sleep.

Another Earth is a 2011 American independent science fiction drama film directed by Mike Cahill and starring Brit Marling (who also produced and co–wrote the script) and William Mapother.

The idea behind Another Earth first developed out of director Mike Cahill and actress  Brit Marling speculating as to what it would be like were one to encounter one’s own self. In order to explore the possibility on a large scale, they devised the concept of a duplicate Earth. The visual representation of the duplicate planet was deliberately made to evoke the Moon, (…) This movie shares some of its plot details with the 1969 British sci-fi movie Doppelganger (imdb).

The film ignores the physical consequences of having a similar-sized planet and moon appear nearby (e.g. effect on tides, gravity and atmosphere) other than depicting night time as brighter due to the reflection of the Sun’s light off the other planet. The DVD / Blu-ray deleted scenes feature reveals that the film makers did intend to illustrate some of the consequences by filming a scene in which Rhoda encounters flowers floating in mid-air, but the scene was cut from the final film. Monos is a 2019 internationally co-produced war drama film directed by Alejandro Landes, written by Landes and Alexis Dos Santos and produced by Fernando Epstein, Santiago Zapata, Cristina Landes and Landes himself. It stars Julianne Nicholson, Sofia Buenaventura and Moisés Arias. The film follows a group of armed teenage guerillas assigned to watch over a hostage.

The film was loosely inspired by the novels Lord of the Flies by William Golding and Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Filmic influences included Come and See and Beau Travail. While “monos“, the title as well as the code name of the main squad in the film, superficially means “monkeys” in Spanish, it signifies the prefix mono- of Greek origin meaning “alone” or “one”. The Lighthouse is a 2019 psychological horror film directed and produced by Robert Eggers (the vvitch – 2015), who co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Max Eggers. Shot in black-and-white with a 1.19:1 aspect ratio, the film stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson as two lighthouse keepers who start to lose their sanity when a storm strands them on the remote island where they are stationed.

The literature of Maine-based writer Sarah Orne Jewett served as a significant point of reference for the dialects used in The Lighthouse. Maritime and surrealistic elements from the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Herman Melville and Robert Louis Stevenson also informed the writing of the film.
