REEL TO REEL FEEL

This live performance is the embodiment of our need to perform and create during the lockdown of 2020. Our focus is a visceral live performance where the dialog happens between 2 humans and a real reel to reel tape machine strumming the chords of a guitar used as a resonator, always in feedback. It feels like performing in front of an uncanny aural mirror. We aim to create new textures and music while in dialogue with a machine that is always listening, repeating & varying the pitch of the inputted signal. The resulting symbiosis is focused on the fast-shifting dynamic between humans and technology. The visuals were all created using slow Al Morphs a concept that aesthetically compliments the dialogue between man and machine, always evolving, a constant struggle to build and deconstruct an image with another. This specific shifting dynamic became at the end of our research the artwork itself. The main scene was also filmed and edited in a similar workflow, by transforming pictures of the performers into moving images, it seems like the two performers are two ephemeral creatures, always shifting decomposing, and regenerating their bodies.

DauΓ°i Baldrs (1997)

DauΓ°i Baldrs (youtube)Β (Old NorseΒ for “Baldr’s Death” or “The Death of Baldr”) is the fifth album by the Norwegian solo actΒ Burzum. Unlike Burzum’s previous work, which was mostlyΒ black metal, this is aΒ dark ambientΒ album. It was recorded using aΒ synthesizerΒ and a normalΒ tape recorderΒ byΒ Varg Vikernes while he was in prison, as he was not allowed to have any other instruments or recording equipment. The album has been described by many as “dungeon synth“.

The album is about the legacy ofΒ Baldr, the second son ofΒ OdinΒ inΒ Norse mythology. Most likely a concept album, as the whole album leads up toΒ RagnarΓΆk, the battle at the end of the world in Norse mythology.

“Illa tiΓ°andi” is easily the most minimalist track, with only two sections being repeated over the 10:29 duration, which are both simple piano melodies, eventually accompanied by a choral chant. It is an alternative version of the song “Decrepitude I” (wiki)

ThulΓͺan Mysteries (2020)

ThulΓͺan Mysteries (youtube)Β is the twelfth and final studio album by Norwegian musical projectΒ Burzum.

Recorded as a soundtrack to Vikernes’ role-playing gameΒ MYFAROG,Β the album follows the post-prison era medieval/dark ambient musical style. Vikernes said of the album:

“Since my true passion has never been music, but actually tabletop role-playing games, I figured I should make this an album intended for that use; as background music for my own MYFAROG (Mythic Fantasy Role-playing Game).”

The album’s artwork is by Norwegian artistΒ Theodor KittelsenΒ called “NΓΈkken” (wiki)
